Barbara Hilliard
Bedouin Treks is an intimate account of a year spent living under the Sharia Law in the remote Asir region of the Arabian desert which remains the extreme heart of Wahhabi fundamentalist Islam. Despite the risks for a single female, Hilliard is able to drive into the desert and meet the Bedouin in their homes where few had previously met a westerner.
Barbara Hilliard is a linguist and now lives outside Sydney in the Blue Mountains.
Bedouin Treks is not a conventional segment of autobiography. Besides the writer there is another principal character in this book: deepest Arabia, that area adjacent to Freya Stark's Hadhramaut, the cradle and nursery of the fierce, intolerant Wahhabi sect. It is not easy to understand a culture where a sixteen year old boy who has sex with his twelve year old male cousin is shot by his victim's father. Barbara Hilliard makes that comprehension if not approval possible. She writes with an alert and easy style that engages the reader immediately. Mark Sykes (grandson of Sir Mark Sykes of the Sykes-Picot agreement)

It’s extremely interesting in the present climate for the likes of me who didn't have a clue what it's like over there... You have given me a great insight to the real Saudi... Sounds absolutely fascinating and crazy too. M.C.N. Henry

It was a delight to read! Jean-Paul Choque
It is a good read and very interesting book! Maxwell Charles
