Barry Allan

Author of the biography of Sophia Grantham, and his latest book, Black Sheep and Gold Diggers.

Barry Allan was born in Melbourne, but lived in Brisbane until finishing school and joining the Royal Australian Air Force in 1962. He served for 20 years in the technical field of electronics and communications. In 1982 he joined the Northern Territory public service, and over the next 18 years managed most of the Territory Government's communications and electronic systems.

He retired in 1999 and started researching his family tree, where he discovered that his great great great grandmother was a convict named Sophia Grantham. He started writing a novel based on her life, but was persuaded by other family researchers to make it as truthful as possible, and so it became a biography. All copies have been sold.

His second book Black Sheep and Gold Diggers has recently been published. It is an historically accurate account of the lives of Richard Venville and Joseph Allen, both ex convicts who made successful lives for themselves and their large families in Victoria in the mid 1800s.
