Clarence Hardy

Dr Hardy is an expert in the field of Atomic Energy. For the last 12 years he has been the honorary secretary of the Australian Nuclear Association and editor of its bimonthly newsletter Nuclear Australia.

Clarence James Hardy was born in Derby, England, in 1931. He received the degrees of BSc (Hons, Chemistry) in 1952 and PhD in 1955 from the University of Bristol. He worked at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment of the UK Atomic Energy Authority at Harwell from 1955 to 1971. He was seconded to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the USA, where he worked from 1965-66 on advanced nuclear fuel fabrication processes. From 1966 he managed the Chemical Processing Group in the Chemistry Division at Harwell, and was responsible for R&D on new nuclear fuel processes and on contract research on applications of nuclear technology in non-nuclear industries. He was awarded the degree of DSc by the University of Bristol in 1971 for his published work in over 50 papers and patents in nuclear technology.

Dr Hardy was appointed in 1971 as Chief of the new Chemical Technology Division of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC) at Lucas Heights near Sydney. He was then appointed Program Manager, Uranium Fuel Cycle (1974-77), Chief Scientist, Nuclear Fuel Cycle (1977-83), and Chief, Isotope Division (1983-87). He published a further 50 papers in the nuclear field from 1971-1987. When the AAEC was replaced by the Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation (ANSTO) in 1987, Dr Hardy was appointed Director, Industrial Technology Program, and Director, Tracerco Australasia (a Joint Venture by ANSTO and ICI Australia). Since retiring from ANSTO in 1991, he has undertaken private consulting in industrial and nuclear technology and in conference management. Dr Hardy was Vice-President and President of the Australian Nuclear Association (ANA).

Dr Hardy was the Executive Chairman of six National Conferences on Nuclear Science & Engineering held biennially in Australia from 1995-2005. He was also Executive Chairman of the 9th Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference in Sydney in May 1994, and of the 15th Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference in Sydney in October 2006, both hosted by the ANA.

Dr Hardy has been closely involved with the Pacific Nuclear Council (PNC), a non-profit non-government organisation made up of nuclear societies and nuclear industry groups in nine countries in the Pacific Basin. He was appointed Vice-President from 2004-2006 and President from 2006-2008. He was also the Leader of two PNC Task Groups, the Task Group on Radioactive Waste Management, which produced a major report in 1996, and the Task Group on Nuclear Information and Education, which produced a major report in 2008.
